Initial Update for Earthquake (Template)
Civil Defence urges residents and visitors to be prepared for Earthquake [insert name]
⚠️ EARTHQUAKE — DUNEDIN Otago Civil Defence Emergency Management Group Update #1 | [CONFIRM: time and date]
A [magnitude (TBC)] earthquake has struck [location/area (TBC)], causing shaking across Dunedin and the wider Otago region.
Drop, Cover and Hold is the right action during an earthquake. If you are still shaking, get under a sturdy table or desk, protect your head and neck, and hold on until the shaking stops. If you are outside, move away from buildings, trees, and power lines, then Drop, Cover and Hold.
If the earthquake felt long or strong, move immediately to higher ground. Do not wait for an official warning — this is the natural warning for tsunami. Stay away from the coast, beaches, harbours, rivers, and estuaries until Civil Defence issues an official all-clear.
Check yourself for injuries and help others if it is safe to do so. Watch out for fallen power lines and stay away from damaged buildings and structures. If you smell gas, open windows, leave immediately, and turn off the gas supply if it is safe to do so. Do not use lifts. Use stairs to exit damaged buildings.
Expect aftershocks. Each time you feel one, Drop, Cover and Hold. Aftershocks may continue for hours, days, or weeks.
Phone 111 if life is at risk. Share this message with your whānau, neighbours, and community.
Further updates will be issued as information becomes available. Monitor [CONFIRM: agency website URL] and local radio for official Civil Defence information.
